Throughout most of the day, we find ourselves constantly scrolling, whether it's to seek inspiration or to take a brief escape from our routine lives. What might initially appear as a quick 5-minute scroll often turns into a prolonged 4-hour activity, as we engage with content across various platforms. Our lives are saturated with consuming a vast amount of content every single second. Among this flood of information, there are numerous things we genuinely wish to revisit, such as a recommended song, details about a local concert, or a charming cafe spotted on Instagram.

In contrast to the conventional method of using search engines to find information, our inclination is towards a personalized search approach. Depending on our specific needs, we tend to perform boutique searches on platforms like Youtube, Instagram, Pinterest, and others, as the content we seek often originates from sources we trust or favour. However, the difficulty doesn't solely lie in navigating one social platform; it extends to the challenge of managing multiple platforms concurrently. Keeping tabs on content we appreciate or intend to revisit across these diverse platforms becomes demanding. What we truly need is an effective system for social indexing that simplifies this process.

This is where Chips Stack comes into picture:

Considering the diagram (the Chip Stack) above, envision a platform called Chips.social, where you can curate a wide array of captivating content you encounter: images, posts, music, links, and ideas, forming the foundational layer known as "the intent." You can then organize these elements into delightful collections that align precisely with your interests and objectives.

The next layer, known as "the time and place layer," allows you to add reminders for yourself or your audience. Moving further, you discover the "People layer," which facilitates seamless collaboration with your friends. Gone are the days of switching between multiple apps; everything you need is now conveniently located in one place on Chips.social where discovery becomes more meaningful as it’s personalised content from others, rather than a dump everything around.

This platform empowers you to create collections for any purpose, be it travel plans, DIY projects, scrumptious recipes, or anything else that sparks your interest, fostering community interaction. As you network with peers, share your content, and build your identity, you enter the "social layer."

With the social layer in place, the platform enables finance-related functionalities, acknowledging that sharing expenses amongst a group is vital. For instance, you can easily get tickets for your group on Chips.social, adding the "finance layer" to the mix.

Finally, the most critical layer, known as the "protocol layer." Today a large chunk of entertainment, education and collaboration happens by building a relationship with an audience. However that is intermediated and orchestrated by media platforms, whose priority is time-spend on platform as a function of their ad-based business model. Worse yet, your audience is non-transferable and opaque to you, and therefore you don’t own that relationship, which would cease to exist if the platform decides to not prioritise visibility for you.

Chips is about inverting that power dynamics. Putting the power back to why we often come to use these services; People. After-all, we don’t use Instagram because we like Instagram. We use it because we like our friends.

Here’s a sneak peek of how you can create Chips to suit your usage:

Although internet’s core promise was to connect all of us, in the last couple of decades social platforms have transformed into this sort of skewed loudspeakers; jarring us with constant stream of outrage and desensitising us while awarding extreme tribalistic affiliations within this weird sort of echo chamber. Essentially turning our digital social spaces into algorithmic slot machines of content.

It's high time to restructure the internet because it's not merely about data; it's equally essential to consider how we interact with it. Empowering users to create actionable outcomes is like giving them the opportunity to build upon that data and take it to new heights.

Chips.social is the anti-thesis of this madness; Our goal with Chips is to bring back the fun and delight of connecting with people more intimately, nudge to open up, take inspirations from others’ Chip boards. I'm quite pumped to see how these new ways of shared experiences would evolve.
